Informatics

What is that?

"Informatics encourages and facilitates the process of collecting, cultivating, and organizing information digitally so that it can be better utilized by the community, businesses, organizations, and individuals.  Informatics aims at improving the human experience by bridging the digital divide to bring people, information, and technology together so that technology can be put to work for solving complex problems facing humanity today."
(Informatics definition from Indiana University Southeast Website)

Gathering and gaining new information is a major part of what an Informatician does.  An Informatician also organizes and presents information in a way that can be easily searchable.

They also can be the middleman between the users and the programmers.  A person with knowledge in Informatics knows the technical side to be able to communicate with computer programmers and still be able to keep the user in mind making sure that their needs are being met.

Every organization can use someone with knowledge of Informatics.  Some examples of how organizations could use information gathered by someone with knowledge in Informatics include:

  • A bank could use the information gathered about their current clients to offer new or expand current services to better service their current clients or to bring in new clients.

  • An advertising agency can use information gathered to find the latest trends of particular targeted group in order to effectively advertise to the targeted audience.

  • A hospital could use information gathered about their patients to see if there are particular health related programs that could help groups of people in certain areas.

  • State and Federal transportation officials can use information gathered to see what areas are prone to having accidents.  They could also look at the amount of traffic a particular road has to see if there is a need to build or upgrade a road, bridge, or highway.
